Kickstarter can be a weird and heartbreaking place at times, where good and deserving games don’t get the funding they need. One of those projects unfortunately is GoD Factory: Wingmen by Nine Dots Studio.
The project only received $33,247 of its $70,000 target which must have been a kick-in-the-teeth for the team, seeing as they did all they could to keep people interested and drum up more support. Nine Dots sent multiple updates, introduced four new ship types, and released a playable build of for backers and non-backers so word would spread as far as possible: “So, we’ve been working pretty hard to have a version of the game that we could openly distribute to everyone to show them that yes GoD Factory IS worth backing.” This was a smart move by the studio, seeing as they received two-hundred more backers because of it.
It’s a shame that the project for the slick-looking, competitive 4vs4 space combat simulator, with its amazingly-unique ships and intense battles, wasn’t successful. But as Nine Dots hinted in their last update they may not be saying goodbye to this great game just yet: “…we’ve started building a community and achieved a lot during the campaign, which helped us make many connections.” The team then elaborated on this by saying: “Thanks to these connections, while one door was shut, others were opened. We don’t intend to give up yet. We may relaunch a Kickstarter campaign in the future, or we may just start alpha funding sooner than we expected and see how it goes.”
We’ve got our fingers crossed that this isn’t the end for GoD Factory: Wingmen. I hope these ‘connections’ that the team have made can help them get the game developed and released without the need of another agonizing campaign. But if Nine Dots do have to go back to Kickstarter, I genuinely believe this time they will achieve their goal with the new fan-base they created throughout the original project. But now is the time to step back, have a couple of commiseration beers and talk over all the options this talented team have open to them. In my opinion, GoD Factory: Wingmen needs to be released and I would have no hesitation to back this deserving title again.
