Following Kimmy’s article yesterday about her experience of meeting the guys from Special Effect at this year’s event, next up is W1ngman with his best of Eurogamer 2013.
As you can imagine, the entire Eurogamer Expo was filled to the brim with a whole host of excellent games including big hitters such as Call of Duty: Ghosts, Batman: Arkham Origins and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, along with many developer sessions. But the area that always get the 1001-Up.com team excited is the indie scene and this year we were spoiled for choice. Placed in the back of Earl’s Court, London was the Indie Arcade area: a small corridor that was wall-to-wall with amazing projects full from very talented developers with bright futures ahead of them.
The indie title that stood out for me among all of those great games was Eden Star by Flix Interactive. This passionate team are based in Birmingham and have been working hard on their first project for over eight months and, even in the pre-alpha stage that we got to check out, we can say that it’s already looking very slick and stylish.
For those of you who have not had the pleasure of discovering this game just yet, we can tell you that Eden Star is a first-person survival creation title that blends innovative physics-based combat, destructible environments, and freeform construction with the exploration of a hostile alien world. Players gather mineral resources from the planet of Pharus 7 in order to fund the expansion and development of unique and powerful technologies as they create, destroy and manipulate the world around them.
When we had a playthrough, we found that the gameplay was similar to Mirrors Edge in the way that has an element of free-running that’s pulled off extremely well. Dismantling a wall with your destructive powers then gathering up the minerals makes for a satisfying experience that I could never imagine getting boring.
It’s no surprise that Eden Star has been successful on Steam Greenlight recently, so this title is already on its way to being where it wants to be. The Flix Interactive team are due to launch a Kickstarter campaign very soon and we’ll try to let you know when that happens so you can go back this amazing project.
If you’d like to know more about the game, keep your eyes peeled for our interview with Flix Interactive on 08 October 2013 – a big thank you to CEO John Tearle for answering our questions and guiding us through the demo! If you haven’t yet seen it, take a look at Kimmy’s ‘Best of Eurogamer’ article on Special Effect, and watch out for P-Diddy’s piece on Beyond: Two Souls on Wednesday.
