Spotlight on cosplay

As if the 1001-Up.com team wasn’t already excited about the 2013 Eurogamer Expo enough already. Not only will there be a ton of great games on show including some red-hot exclusives like Call of Duty: Ghosts and Batman: Arkham Origins, we’re extremely excited about our interviews with developers such as Seven Studios (Ethan: Meteor Hunter), Flix Interactive (Eden Star) and Fireproof Games (The Room 2). But there’s also something else happening that Eurogamer is putting somewhat of a big spotlight on this year: the wonderful world of cosplay.

For the first time in its history the Eurogamer Expo will host a huge programme of cosplay-related activities including the appearance of top guests, panels, contests and the Eurogamer Cosplay Championship taking place on Saturday, 28 September 2013. And with the amount of people that will be at the event dressed up as their favourite video game character, you know that the eventual winner will have to pull something special out of the bag.

On a specially-designed stage, the expo will host a variety of cosplay panels and talks including prop making, prosthetics, advance sewing, make-up techniques and performance with some added fun game-shows including ‘Beat the Cosplay Clock!’ and the Eurogamer Gaming Quiz.

Competitions take place on all four days of the expo with the championship happening on Saturday at 15:00. All the contests have prizes up for grabs including awards being given for Best Individual, Best Group and Best Skit. Rules can be found on the Eurogamer website and entries can be submitted via email to cosplay@eurogamer.net. A special Nintendo-sponsored contest will also take place on Sunday; all these events make me want to pull my Skeletor outfit out of the cupboard and get involved.

The guests and judges are a great line-up of award-winning cosplayers including Sketch Mc-Draw, Stacey Rebecca, Laura Sindall, Dragonfly, Tigerlilly, Karen Dawson, Frederica La Noir, Chiquaitita, Kelly Jean and Emily Inferni as well as cosplay journalist Becca Moriarty and Zonic who will present the programme. So that’s plenty of people who come from the world of cosplay and know what they’re talking about.

Being massive fans of fancy dress ourselves we can’t wait to see all the activity going on at the expo; I may even seek out the best costumes and get some photos for you all to look at. So with cosplay being as massive as it is all around the world, no wonder Eurogamer has decided to give it an even share of the spotlight this year. About time if you ask me.
