Great news for Star Wars fans this week, as Battlefield developer DICE’s reboot of the fantastic Star Wars Battlefront series has been scheduled for summer 2015. The news emerged after a stockholders call at EA earlier this week and I for one cannot be more excited.
EA also revealed that Battlefront will be the first of many Star Wars titles coming from the company in the next several years. CFO Blake Jorgensen was quoted as saying during the investors call: “We have partnered with Walt Disney and LucasFilm to develop a whole new generation of Star Wars games for the console as well as for mobile and handheld devices. The first game that we’re focused on is Battlefront. It’s a traditional game that’s done extremely well and this will most likely come out around the same time as the Star Wars movies start to come out, probably in the summer of ’15.”
EA doesn’t have the monopoly on Star Wars titles however and isn’t the only developer making games for the franchise. Others include Visceral, the makers of Dead Space (review coming soon) and Dante’s Inferno, and BioWare, the creators of the Mass Effect series and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (review coming soon).
By the looks of it, the Star Wars franchise is in good hands with these developers and I can’t wait to see what they have to offer us in the next few years after being such a big fan of the original Battlefront games (I bought Battlefront 2 all over again during the summer sale on Steam). The teaser trailer above doesn’t show a lot obviously as we’re still two years away from release, but it’s enough to get the excitement flowing. The title should mark a new and exciting era in the series and it can only be a good thing, especially on the next-gen consoles; this universe can be explored over and over again in more detail and will be better-looking then ever.
